Site 18: Wireless Telegraphy Station

This is a dispersed site about 1 mile from the aerodrome. It was a long range Wireless Telegraphy [W/T] station used for communicating over long distance, for example, from station to aircraft. Every aerodrome had a WT station to keep contact with their own aircraft. My father Claude Knight worked here.

Transmitter Building

[Drawing No. 625/42] (Map Ref: 639)

Radio transmitters were housed in this building and it was surrounded by aerials secured by wire stays.

Cement rendered concrete block with external piers at ten foot centres. The building is 40 ft long by 18 ft wide. A pitched roof of corrugated asbestos sheeting. Standard 18 ft steel roof trusses.

This building is extant and converted to a dwelling. [2007]
